Reducing Health Inequalities for Individuals with learning disadilities.

Here at Just Homes Care we are committed to advocating for a better quality of life for all. Around 950,000 adults and 300,000 children in England have a learning disability, something which can affect the way a person understands information, how they communicate and how they cope independently.

A report by the NHS in 2020 found that on average, those with a learning difficulty have over 20 years less life than the general population and are three to four times more likely to die from an avoidable medical cause. These avoidable causes are mostly related to timely and effective treatment not being given. We are not okay with these statistics.

The information suggests that proactive lifelong healthcare and treatment within a timely manner will drastically improve outcomes and make a great difference in keeping people healthy. Outcomes from the report include the suggestion to offer those with learning disabilities annual health checks tailored to their needs, and carried out by appropriately trained providers, making healthcare and information more accessible, ensuring reasonable adjustments, reducing overmedication and educating individuals about the signs of disease.

We are hoping to run a series of workshops throughout the year looking at educating and improving the health of our wonderful service users and staff. Please contact the main office with any ideas or suggestions for workshops that you might like to be involved in. More details to follow…
